Brother Barry Edward Moore, Omega ’55, of Normal, Illionois peacefully passed away at his home on Thursday, January 30, 2014.
His funeral will be at 11:00am, Wednesday (02-05-2014) at Epiphany Catholic Church, Normal, IL with Monsignor Eric Powell officiating. A private family entombment will be in East Lawn Memorial Gardens, Bloomington, IL. Visitation will be from 4:00-7:00 pm, Tuesday (02-04-2014) at Carmody-Flynn Williamsburg Funeral Home, Bloomington, IL with a prayer service at 7:00pm. There will also be visitation for one hour prior to the service, Wednesday at the church.
In lieu of flowers, donations to the International Collection of Child Art, Epiphany Church and The Illinois Cancer Care Foundation are appreciated.
Barry was born September 13, 1933 in Greensburg, Pennsylvania, the son of Edward James and Eva Pearl McAdoo Moore. He married Mary Gradler on July 22, 1957.
Dr. Moore is survived by his wife, Mary and his four daughters Meg (Peter) Burns, Erin Moore, Mary Lee Moore (Nicolaos Georgakopoulos) and Heather Moore (Steven Ginsberg). He is also survived by his brother, James Albert Moore and his sister, Marilyn Moore Couchenour.
He also leaves behind nine grandchildren – Annie, Liam, Thalie, Barry, Nicholas, Jonathan, Benjamin, Sela and Liora.
He was preceded in death by his parents, as well his son, Sgt. Barry F. Moore, USAF.
Dr. Moore earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Art Education from Indiana University of Pennsylvania, a Master’s Degree in Art Education from University of Pittsburgh, and a Doctor of Education Degree from the University of Illinois. While at the University of Illinois he was a member of Kappa Delta Pi, the International Honor Society in Education.
Dr. Moore was instrumental in establishing a Kappa Delta Rho chapter at the Indiana University of Pennsylvania. He was involved in drafting one of the first racially inclusive fraternity charters of that time. He also served as chapter president. He was later recognized as an outstanding alumnus by receiving the Ordo Honoris award, the highest award given by the National Fraternity of Kappa Delta Rho. He also received The Distinguished Alumni Award from Indiana University of Pennsylvania in recognition of his work with children’s verbal responses to works of art.
Dr. Moore taught Art in the Penn Hills School District, Pittsburgh, and Metcalf School, Normal. He was a professor of Art at Illinois State University for 30 years. His passion for his own personal art production included creating watercolor paintings along with working in other media. Work with intricate glass and copper enamel pieces, along with jewelry was also a specialty.
In the early 1970’s, Dr. Moore expanded his full time teaching responsibilities at ISU to include volunteering to curate the fledgling International Collection of Child Art. His love of children’s art was a natural expansion of his teaching art education specifically in preparing young teachers for teaching art in the classroom. He was honored in 2005 by the Dean of ISU with special recognition for his contributions to this unique worldwide resource for research and education. Dr. Moore was chosen to serve on the Illinois Art’s Council continuing his love and appreciation of the Arts.
